WSL: Emma Hayes confident in title race as Chelsea come from behind to beat Liverpool

Emma Hayes was pleased Chelsea got their Champions League hangover out their system to keep control of their WSL title destiny with a 2-1 win over Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Sam Kerr scored a late winner as Chelsea came from behind in their first match since their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Barcelona.

Liverpool went ahead early through Emma Koivisto but Niamh Charles equalised and Kerr won it four minutes from time when stabbed home after a shot from Jessie Fleming had crashed back off the crossbar.

Victory means Chelsea are four points behind WSL leaders Manchester United but they have two games in hand, as the title race looks set to go right to the wire.

Hayes said: “We were asleep in the first 10 minutes and conceded, we had to dig it out and we did that. I think we had a hangover from the Camp Nou and that game.

“It took us a while to get our legs going but we brought on some quality in the second half and that gave us a better attacking threat.

“Sam did what she has done many times for this team and popped up with the winner.

“I knew we would fight until the end. I know we can produce better performances than we have done. But when you get to this stage you have to dig out results, we have done that and I am confident we can keep doing it.”
