Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Steve Phillips is expected to officially resign on Sunday.
WalesOnline understands Phillips will finally fall on his sword after an enormous groundswell of outrage over the 'toxic' allegations directed at the union this week following a damning BBC documentary on Monday. Phillips had attempted to remain in post, insisting he was still the right man to lead the WRU, while chairman Ieuan Evans had backed him to stay as he announced an external taskforce will be set up to clean up the game.
Those attempts to remain in power have proved futile amid the swirling anger and demand for change that made Phillips' position untenable.
The four Welsh regions, who have long been at loggerheads with WRU bosses over funding, made their move on Thursday evening, fully endorsing a letter sent to Evans demanding the removal of Phillips and the entire WRU board. It came after a number of Welsh grassroots clubs expressed their dismay at the developments during a seismic week.
Crucially, a number of major sponsors publicly called for the WRU to get its house in order, while politicians also weighed in with demands for significant change at the top.

One staff member was accused of using a racist term in a meeting and another allegedly said he wanted to "rape" a female colleague. Another woman says she considered suicide as a result of bullying at the WRU.
It has also emerged the former chair of the Professional Rugby Board, Amanda Blanc, warned the union it faced an equality and diversity "ticking timebomb" in her devastating resignation speech in 2021.
An interim replacement for Phillips is likely be announced shortly before a permanent new CEO is sought. Time is of the essence with the WRU and four regions still to officially rubberstamp a new funding deal that will allow contracts to be offered to players beyond this season.
