Wrexham superfan Bootlegger parties with topless players as brilliant pub celebration footage emerges

Wrexham players partied for a second night on Sunday, and in esteemed local company, as they celebrated their historic National League promotion with local superfan Bootlegger.

The 3-1 win over seventh-placed Boreham Wood confirmed promotion back to the Football League for the first time in 15 years, with owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watching on stunned from the stands.

With a host of Hollywood stars descending upon the Racecourse for the showdown with The Wood, Wrexham’s players might have been forgiven for indulging and whisking themselves away for a stylish weekender somewhere.

But instead, Ben Tozer and Co last night celebrated with the man who was there before all the stardust, Wrexham’s very own A-lister - Bootlegger (or Karl Phillips to his mam).

Footage on social media shows dozens of shirtless fans, alongside the club captain, joining in with the festivities at Bootlegger’s local stomping ground, The Fat Boar pub.

Joining in with chants of “we’re gonna win the league” and “we hate Chester,” a topless Tozer can be seen embracing the local celebrity. In reply to the video, and sounding slightly worse for wear, Bootlegger himself tweeted: “What a night what a twin (sic) what a ducking club.”

Who is Bootlegger?

‘Alright lads?’ The Twitter icon has a cult following of more than 350,000 on the platform, while various fan accounts dedicate themselves to clipping his videos into ‘out of context’ memes. He’s also got a strong YouTube following with one iconic video, during a 2014 away clash at local rivals Chester City, amassing more than 800,000 views.

It’s hard to describe why the man in his 40s from Gwersyllt, near Wrexham, is so popular, but his daily vlogs pouring pints from his self-described ‘working man’s kettle’ (draught beer pump) or talking about his ‘grueller of a day’ on the building site have struck a chord with hundreds of thousands of people. He’s even got his own beer named after him, brewed by Wrexham Lager, and it’s a good job too because the celebrations show no sign of slowing down.
