Wrexham ban striker’s ‘f*** the Tories’ football boots

The offending boots will never be worn after Wrexham stepped in

Footballer Paul Mullin will not be allowed to wear the boots he had daubed with the message “f*** the Tories”, his club Wrexham have said.

The 27-year-old had the footwear custom made and he re-tweeted pictures of them from the account of designers Zebra Customs ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Halifax Town.

However, the striker - who bagged 32 goals to be the Welsh side’s top scorer last season - must now find other boots to play in after Wrexham took issue.

A club statement read: “For the record, the pictures wouldn’t have been permitted to be taken, had we known, and the issue will be dealt with privately by the club.

“The club has adopted a neutral position on many matters with a political dimension and intends to continue to do so going forward.

“The club also acknowledges that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether that be employees or supporters but would also highlight that an individual view cannot be fairly attributed, as the view of everyone or the club itself.”

Fifth-tier Wrexham Football Club came to international fame last year when they were taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The documentary Welcome to Wrexham followed.

The town’s MP is Sarah Atherton, a Conservative, the statement acknowledged. She said it was "the view of one individual rather than the club as a whole" and thanked the team for responding quickly.

The club statement added: “After this unwelcome distraction, the club hopes the focus remains on our objectives of gaining promotion on the field and creating community benefit off it, in which Paul Mullin will continue to play a significant part.”

Liverpool-born Mr Mullin has not responded to the statement online but has not taken the tweet down from his own timeline. He had previously been at Cambridge United and was Wrexham’s most noteworthy signing after the actors took over the team.

The other side of the boot to the “f*** the Tories” message features a skyline of Liverpool with “this place” engraved as a nod to Merseyside musician Jamie Webster.

On Twitter opinion was divided. Wrexham fan Gavin France wrote: “The only PM at No.10 we care about.”

Thomas Evans was less happy. He responded to Mr Mullin: “You are meant to be a role model for people and an ambassador for your club. Instead you encourage hatred on people you disagree with politically and encourage this kind of foul language from your admirers. Grow up.”
