New Delhi: A day after the protesting wrestlers were removed forcibly from their protest site Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police on Monday said they would be allowed to hold a protest at a suitable venue other than Jantar Mantar.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) tweeted, “The strike and demonstration of wrestling wrestlers was going on smoothly at Jantar Mantar. Yesterday (Sunday), the protesters violated the law in a frenzied manner despite all the requests and requests. Therefore, the ongoing dharna has been called off.
"If the wrestlers apply for permission to stage a sit-in again in future, they will be given permission at any of the suitable, notified places other than Jantar Mantar," he said.
On Sunday, security forces tried to prevent wrestlers from marching towards the inauguration of the new Parliament building, which led to a scuffle between the two sides, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
A case was registered against other protesters, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, for rioting and obstructing government employees from work. Subsequently, Delhi Police got the Jantar Mantar area vacated, where the wrestlers have been sitting on a dharna for more than a month. The police said that the wrestlers would not be allowed any dharna again at Jantar Mantar.
Police said that 700 people were detained across Delhi, including 109 protesters with three wrestlers, at Jantar Mantar. The detained women were released on Sunday evening.
The wrestlers had been protesting at Jantar Mantar since April 23 demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The protesting wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan of sexually assaulting several female wrestlers, including a minor.
