Human remains discovered by cleaners under a Brisbane unit complex have been identified as female but her name, age and cause of death remain a mystery.

Police have confirmed her body was found tightly wrapped and partially buried in a locked area behind a wall at the building on Alderley Avenue in Alderley on Wednesday morning.

The remains had been hidden for "some months" with residents failing to notice any smell.

Forensic samples taken from the scene have been sent for urgent testing, including analysis of fingerprints found near the body.

The post-mortem is under way, and forensic officers expect to finalise crime scene examinations on Friday afternoon.

While investigators wait for the forensic test results, detectives continue to scour various missing person reports.

Anyone with information that may assist investigations has been urged to contact the police.
