The Miami Dolphins went into Sunday facing a winless Carolina Panthers team, but things got much more serious when they allowed rookie quarterback Bryce Young and company to build a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter.
However, Miami flipped a switch in the second, scoring three touchdowns on their way to a 42-21 victory over Carolina to improve to 5-1 on the season.
That was only the second time that the Dolphins had left the first period with a deficit, and in the only other game, the team’s Week 4 battle with the Buffalo Bills, they were unable to come back.
This victory was a great opportunity to show that they could overcome adversity, even if it was against a team that hadn’t shown much prior to the matchup.
On Monday, Dolphins receiver Braxton Berrios spoke about that exact feeling.
“Honestly, that was a good piece of adversity for us,” Berrios said. “When you sit on that bench and look around, that’s exactly how it felt. Nobody flinched. Nobody panicked. We knew we didn’t execute in the way we were supposed to. The kind of guys that we have on this offense, we knew that wasn’t going to last the entire game. To go three and out one series, shocking to go three and out two series a little bit more than that. Then again, we had an explosive play, got back on track and then it kind of – just everything restarted. We flushed the two series down the drain and the rest of them worked out pretty well.”
Now, the Dolphins have arguably their toughest test of the season so far on the horizon, as they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7. There’s a chance that they don’t start out with their usual large lead again, meaning they’ll have to use some of that resiliency that they displayed this past week.
Even if they don’t have to dip into that this week, it’ll be useful at some point during a long campaign for a team that has postseason aspirations.
