Wout Weghorst sums up promising Man Utd quality - "I've never noticed it before"

Wout Weghorst is already thinking about the next trophy that Manchester United can get their hands on - hours after beating Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

The Dutch striker, 30, helped the Red Devils pull off a comfortable 2-0 win at a packed Wembley on Sunday to claim their first piece of silverware in nearly six years. Weghorst has only been at the club for two months since signing on loan from Burnley, but already believes that United - who remain in contention to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League under galvanising manager Erik ten Hag this season - are capable of collecting more trophies between now and May thanks to their "special" team spirit.

Speaking to MUTV, the Netherlands international was asked about his side's strong togetherness and declared: "It's quite special for me. I've never noticed it before. We have a special group."

On the tantalising prospect of earning even more silverware this term, Weghorst added: "Today was [just] the first one, hopefully; we've got three more to go. We have to enjoy this one and celebrate it but on the other side, we keep on going, we're hungry for more."

Sunday's triumph marked the first major trophy that Weghorst has won throughout his long career, so he was just as delighted from a personal point of view as he was for his team-mates. "[It's] a great feeling. It's good to win something," the 30-year-old, who provided the assist for Marcus Rashford to score United's second goal, beamed to club media.

"For me, it's the first time I've won a trophy and, for the club, it was quite long ago, so it's a great feeling to bring back some silverware. [Playing at Wembley] was a special feeling, a special final. There's only one thing that matters and that's performing, that's winning, and that's what we did. Then, at the end, you can enjoy it and see the atmosphere. It was a special occasion. It was a great one."

Weghorst's message was echoed by his manager, Ten Hag, who joked in his post-match press conference that he was already onto the next trophy after accidentally leaving the cup behind in the Wembley media room. "We had to win the first one and that is what we did today," the Red Devils boss affirmed.

"I think we get a lot of inspiration from this and also more confidence that we can do it. We are still at the start to restore Manchester United back to where we belong, that is winning trophies. This is the first one."

His team don't have long until their next cup competition, as West Ham visit Old Trafford on Wednesday in the FA Cup fifth round. Eight days later, after a trip to Anfield to face arch-enemies Liverpool in the Premier League this Sunday, Ten Hag and Co. are back on the continental front when they welcome Real Betis in the Europa League round of 16.
