Wout Weghorst makes confident Man Utd claim and explains permanent transfer plan

Wout Weghorst is confident he can find the net at Manchester United as he underlined his desire to earn a permanent move at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman recently made a loan switch to the North West, where he will spend the remainder of the season. Weghorst had been at Burnley before heading out on loan to Besiktas, where he enjoyed plenty of success in front of goal, which attracted Erik ten Hag's attention.

Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden departure from Manchester dented the side's attacking resources, which meant they were always going to dip into the market. Weghorst will provide more options and has started in the last two games with Anthony Martial out injured.

Weghorst was by no means prolific during his previous spell in England's top flight, scoring just twice as the Clarets were relegated, but maintains he can be the forward United need as he eyes an extended stay in Manchester.

He told Algemeen Dagblad: "In the end, it's very simple. As a striker, you are judged by goals. He (Erik ten Hag) indicated that attacking reinforcements were desirable. A striker, a number 9. Such a type was sought to add to the selection. And then it's simple. The best plays. I have to force it to make minutes.

"In my career, I have always done one thing: score goals. We've had two games now. If I start missing big chances, then I have to start worrying. But I'm confident I can do it and I'll be fine. The coach saw that I was ready. Nice to enforce that confidence from the start.

"It is fantastic to be here. The atmosphere, the away fans, the game that waves up and down. Wonderful. I've been here for over a week now. It's going well. Of course (I want to stay), but first I have to make sure I can be of value to the team and this club."

Marcus Rashford has been United's main source of goals this term with the forward netting 17 times in all competitions. The lack of a No 9 is a concern with Gary Neville urging the club to go into the market come the summer, citing Weghorst as a short-term solution.

He said: "You look at Manchester United and they are still playing with Anthony Martial up front. They have brought Weghorst in, who is a stop-gap until the end of the season and no more. They have obviously lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani from last season, so they have got real problems in that area.

"They haven't got what I would class as a natural centre-forward that gives them the sort of play that Erik ten Hag wants. They need to sign a striker, they need to spend big money on a striker or unearth somebody from somewhere, and I can’t see where that is coming from."
