Wout Weghorst is simply not good enough to play for Manchester United, says Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes issued a damning verdict on Wout Weghorst’s chances of staying at Manchester United beyond end of this season following Sunday’s loss to Liverpool.

The Dutchman joined Erik ten Hag’s side on loan from Burnley during the January transfer window after cutting short a brief stint with Turkish giants Besiktas.

Weghorst has played a key role under ten Hag at Old Trafford, starting all seven Premier League games for which he has been available.

The forward also formed part of the side who won the Carabao Cup last month, ending United’s longest trophy drought in 40 years.

Still, the 30-year-old proved ineffective as United fell to a record-breaking 7-0 defeat at Anfield.

Cody Gakpo, a player United were strongly linked with before signing Weghorst, was one of three players to score twice, alongside Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.

Roberto Firmino also scored late on, leading to ten Hag branding his players “unprofessional”.

Of Weghorst’s performance, United legend Scholes told Premier League productions: “You’re talking about a Manchester United No.10 or a centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive.

“He’s the one who runs about and rants about and everybody likes playing with him because he does that.

“But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United… it’s not there.”
