Wout Weghorst has taken to social media to send a message to Besiktas fans after he appeared to wave 'goodbye' to supporters of the club amid Manchester United's interest in the striker.
The Manchester Evening News reported on Saturday that United are advancing with a potential loan move for Weghorst. The 30-year-old Burnley forward, currently on loan at Besiktas, is being targeted by the Reds in their bid to find a short-term solution to their striker crisis after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 6ft 6in (1.97m) forward scored in his side's Super Lig match against Kasimpasa AS and proceeded to wave to the crowd, before seemingly mouthing 'bye-bye' in what appeared to be a final farewell.
And now the Dutch international has taken to social media to send a message to Besiktas supporters in the wake of his controversial celebration. Weghorst posted a picture of himself to Instagram tapping the club badge alongside the caption: "A special night [Eagles] fan".
Besiktas' nickname is 'The Black Eagles' and Weghorst clearly has an emotional attachment to the club.
It is understood that Besiktas have an option to buy Weghorst for €10million (£8.82m) at the end of the current season, meaning that any potential move United wish to make for the Claret would need the club's approval in order to break the current agreement.
During his time in England, Weghorst made 20 appearances in the top-flight with Burnley during the second-half of the 2021/22 campaign, finding the back of the net on two occasions. Former United manager Louis van Gaal called Weghorst up for his nation's World Cup run, with the target man scoring a brace against Argentina during a breathtaking World Cup quarter-final.
