'Worst thing he's done this year': fans react as Ricky Gervais makes surprise cameo on Piers Morgan and Donald Trump interview

Ricky Gervais made an unexpected appearance during the launch of Piers Morgan’s new TalkTV programme. Piers Morgan Uncensored made its debut on Monday night (April 25) and opened with a monologue from the former Good Morning Britain presenter in which he promised to 'cancel cancel culture.'

"My mission statement for this show is very simple – I’m going to cancel cancel culture," he said. And there was a surprise cameo ahead of the broadcaster’s highly publicised interview with former US president Donald Trump in which they discussed President Putin, Russia and Angela Merkel.

Award-winning comedian Ricky Gervais appeared in a cameo to wish Piers "good luck" with his new series after he sensationally quit GMB last year following a heated row with weatherman Alex Beresford over controverial comments he made about Meghan Markle. In the video Afterlife writer, director and actor Ricky said: “The producers of Piers Morgan’s new show contacted me and asked me if I’d like to be a guest. I said 'definitely not.'"

He added in the tongue-in-cheek message: “They said would you mind doing a quick video wishing him luck? I said, 'do I have to mean it?’ They said 'no.' I said 'Good luck.'”

Piers, 57, revealed that he had received supportive messages ahead of his new show before airing the clip from Ricky. And one viewer said it was the "worst thing he’s done this year."

@adham_ede tweeted: "I would say @rickygervais deciding to record a good luck message to Piers Morgan is the worst thing he's done this year, but I've seen S3 of After Life." And they said the show was "tacky, pathetic, obsessed with Meghan Markle and Partridge-esque cuts." They added: "@piersmorgan thanks for making me laugh and laugh and laugh."

Writer NickyClark said: " So far, so Piers Morgan Manifesto with an ironic video by Ricky Gervais. Thereby giving his fan base what they want, which is to flip cancel culture. But inoffensive enough not to enrage moderates #piersuncensored."

Another viewer @BelfastCol said: "It's car crash TV." And @brokenbottleboy said: "The opening of Piers Morgan’s show has 'cancel culture' and 'snowflake society' in the VT. And Morgan begins 'as Nelson Mandela might have said it’s been a long walk to freedom of speech…' Then he goes straight into a video message from Ricky Gervais."

They added: "I wish I wasn’t sober." But other viewers messaged to say they were loving the show. @Iam_ModLaminjr tweeted: "I’m gonna cancel the cancel culture @piersmorgan. Perfect start piers." And @ClaireBeardsha2 said: "Loving the show."

@MarkRob89654482 applauded: "Absolute cracking opening to the show!" But @martinboxing said: "@piersmorgan I'm a bit disappointed this is being dragged out to another episode tomorrow" after it was revealed the interview would be in two parts, the second featuring his scathing comments about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the teased 'walk out' by Mr Trump.

He blasted Piers Morgan as “very dishonest” while walking out of the interview with the TV presenter after being pressed on his claims that he lost the 2020 presidential election due to voter fraud.

The 45th president became increasingly frustrated with his questions. And at one point he called him a “fool" according to clips of the heated exchange.
