Worst House on the Street home renovators make one vital decision after overspending and end up with £32k profit

Renovating a house is not an easy task as young couple Harry and Yimika found out on Channel 4's Worst House on the Street. The aim of the programme is to buy the worst/most rundown house on the street and attempt to renovate it and make a profit.

Harry and Yimika brought a tired and ugly terraced house in Croydon, with the aim of transforming it into a warm and welcoming family home. Giving themselves a very ambitious budget of £40,000 the couple had big aims for the tight budget.

After living with Yimika's family for a year to save up further they began renovating. At first, the couple ignored hosts Scarlette and Stuart Douglas's advice that removing the chimney would take up too much of their budget and was not worth the cost.

However, after finding asbestos in the roof Harry and Yimika had to reevaluate their decision and to Scarlette and Stuart's relief decided not to spend money removing the chimney. If they had gone ahead with removing the chimney they would have massively eaten into their budget and would have been left with only a £1,000 profit.

The young couple were able to bring some of their ideas to life, however, and Yimika got the porch of her dreams, despite Stuart and Harry originally not being keen. Once the house was transformed both inside and out, with the outside repainted, windows sprayed and more windows added for a light and airy feel, the couple had created a great family home.

Although the couple is not planning to sell and will be living in the property, they made a whopping £32,000 profit. They spent £415,000 to buy the house and spent £38,000 on renovating it. After finding the average of three estate agents valuing the house, the house was now worth £485,000 after the renovations.

Both Harry and Yimkia were very impressed. Harry said: "Oh my gosh, I did not expect that! Wow, that is incredible." Worst House on the Street will air at 8pm on Tuesday, August 2 on Channel 4.
