The transfer window has got off to a flier with almost 50 incomings at Premiership clubs already.
But some supporters are still fearful their side is in danger of being left behind come the big kick-off. Rangers have added pre-contract signing John Souttar and teenager Zak Lovelace so far. And worried Gers fan Eddie Lauchlan, Largs, said: “I want to send a message to the Rangers board, us loyal fans are losing patience. Gio needs investment and so far it looks like a repeat of last summer with little happening. We were told £16 million for Paterson. We were told the Europa League run made more money than Champions League qualification. Rory Wilson to Villa for £350,000. Sponsor after sponsor on the kits.
"So roughly £100 million allegedly brought in and our big news is supposedly a 16-year-old from Millwall? Why aren’t we spending whatever we have got in at least offering contract extensions to those with 12 months remaining? Why aren’t we trying to get first team ready players in?”
Former Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths reckons Hoops fans shouldn’t get too worried about the delay in Jota signing - as James Forrest is still the main man at Parkhead. But Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “If this the same same Forrest who went hiding when the 10 in a row was up for grabs? The record holder at the club for the most time off with injury? Yeah Leigh, he’s definitely the man.”
Speaking of Griff and Kevin Lord, Drylaw, reckons Hibs should have a look. He said: “If Aiden Aiden McGeady is worth a punt then an offer to Leigh Griffiths must also be worth it. At least to do pre season? And he won't carry the same injury risk.” UEFA chef Alexander Ceferin reckons domestic leagues should all carry just one cup competition - sparking fears for the future of the League Cup.
But William Masson, Aberdeenshire, said: “UEFA should keep their meddling out of domestic cup competitions. If they want to ease fixture congestion they could always make their so called Champions League a tournament for champions. Of course that’s not in line with their greed is good culture which has destroyed football as a fans game."
Sticking with UEFA and the calls soon descended into more tit-for-tat mud-slinging from both sides of the Old Firm ahead of their European campaigns.
John Bruce emailed: “It would appear that Celtic fans are already getting excited about the Champions League. It's hard to understand, as Celtic are regarded as the diddy team that everyone wants to play against.
"Last season their predictable Euro drubbings helped with more than a few Rangers fans away trips in Europe, thanks to the tasty bookies odds. Hopefully, their manager will stick to his 'Angeball philosophy', so that even more Bears will get to see the sights in Europe next season.”
George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “On Saturday I mentioned Celtic being an ongoing embarrassment in Europe and two supporters somehow have made that about Rangers’ liquidation. How can they hate a club so much that according to them has only been in existence for 10 years.
"If anyone doubts my comments I have heard that Sky Comedy Gold are coming off air or at least reducing the number of programmes on a Tuesday night as they don’t feel they can compete with Celtic playing in the Champions League.”
George had stirred things up last week by claiming the European Cup was now ‘defunct’.
But Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “I’m gutted to find out that the European Cup trophy that UEFA told us is exactly the same tournament as the one Real Madrid won last month is actually now defunct. Madrid must be raging to find they haven’t really won it 14 times and how the Lisbon Lions must wish they had actually won the Cup Winners’ Cup that has pride of place in UEFA’s boiler room.”
