If you're looking for sun, sea and surf this summer, you won't be in for an idyllic stay at any of these beaches.
From perilous quicksand and carnivorous fish to a coast notorious for its shark attacks, these shores are far from pure.
Also on the list are tropical beauty spots hiding deathly secrets in its waves, and the UK's own contribution where dozens have died.
And if you think those aren't enough to keep you from ever setting foot on the sand again, one location even has wildlife not-so-affectionately referred to as "penis fish", known for swimming up and lodging inside people's bodies.
Don't say we didn't warn you.
1. Hanakapiai Beach, Hawaii
Hawaii may be known for its chilled out locals and way of life, but wade into the waters at this beach and you'll soon be wondering why.
While Hanakapiai may look like paradise, many victims have failed to heed the many warnings about the deadly rip currents.
Due to the coast not being protected by any reef, the currents sweep up ready to drag anyone and anything back out to sea.
Some 83 people have already lost their lives there after going in for a dip.
2. Morecambe Bay, Lancashire
It may be a far cry from the first destination on this list, but Britain's own Morecambe Bay is just as deadly.
Its quicksand, shifting channels, perilous obstacles and river drainages make it a place that's far from an ideal bathing spot when the tide is out.
In 2004, 21 cockle pickers in the bay died after drowning when the tide came in fast. The men, who had been illegally trafficked into the country from China, were said to be unfamiliar with the tides when they were killed.
3. New Smyrna Beach, Florida
Do you remember that feeling of never wanting to swim again after watching Jaws? You make want to take that as a sign if you ever find yourself at this Floridian surfing hotspot.
Just south of Daytona Beach, New Smyrna is known as the unofficial 'shark attack capital' of the world. There were 17 attacks recorded there last year alone.
It's thought that a nearby current which brings baitfish to the coast at New Smyrna makes it a shark's lunchtime hotspot.
Experts estimate that people are 10 times more likely to be bitten at this one beach than anywhere else in the world.
4. Chowpatty Beach, Mumbai
This beach in India ranks among the world's dirtiest and therefore dangerous, due to the sheer amount of pollutants in the water.
Mountains of waste and debris accumulate around this beach each year, despite regular efforts to clean it.
The sinking of a ship in 2011 led to 60,000 metric tons of coal being spilled into the water. Not what you'd call an ideal fishing spot.
5. Fraser Island, Australia
You didn't think you'd get through this list without an entry from Down Under did you?
This stunning destination attracts visitors from across the globe, but officials have had to warn them against running down its sand dunes towards the water due to its aggressive dingo population.
In 2019, the Queensland Government became so concerned they began introducing massive fines for anyone found disturbing them.
6. Staithes Beach, Yorkshire
From Lancashire to Yorkshire, this beauty spot on the North Yorkshire coast is dangerous for very different reasons.
While a day out to Staithes is more commonly associated with cream teas and coach trips, the large waves off the beach there would make it an ideal surfing spot if it wasn't for the risk of cholera.
According to the Daily Star, the beach repeatedly makes the EU’s “swimming prohibited” list due to the pollution levels from farm sewage being drained into the bay. Lovely.
7. Amazon beaches, South America
Venturing into the Amazon ill-equipped is unlikely to end well for most explorers due to its magnitude of poisonous and aggressive creatures and plants.
The fish in the Amazon River are probably the least of your worries, which is some going. Species in there include hungry piranhas, electric eels and anacondas.
Most horrifying are the candiru, nicknamed 'penis fish' by Amazonians. Candiru have been known to swim up and into humans' bodies through the urethra and lodge themselves inside, much to the excruciating pain of their victims.
8. Playa Zipolite, Mexico
This beach has been nicknamed the 'beach of death' by Mexicans due to its fatal currents.
While beautiful, its scenery has fooled many who head into the water.
Thanks to the beach’s growing popularity, a special lifeguard team has been put in place but you may still want to choose another safer beach to go for a dip.
9. Kilauea, Hawaii
The black sand on the beaches at this Hawaiian island may look Instagram-worthy, but a trip here should be done with extreme caution.
The nearby active volcano has been spewing lava, gas and ash clouds into the air for 35 years. As a result, water temperatures have been known to exceed 100 C, which is frankly far too hot to enjoy a dip.
10. Cape Tribulation, Australia
If sharks, penis fish, quicksand, pollution and volcanos weren't enough to make you re-think packing your trunks, how about adding a whole host of deadly jellyfish to the mix?
Those fancying a swim around Cape Tribulation are advised to don 'stinger suits' to protect themselves.
The area is also home to saltwater crocodiles and locals have been warned to give river mouths a wide berth. You don't need to tell us twice.
