'World's dirtiest man' has first wash in 60 years then dies weeks later

A man who's been labelled the ''dirtiest in the world'' has passed away aged 94 after he went decades without washing himself, according to an Iranian state. Amou Haji rejected a shower for over half a century as he believed that cleaning his body would make him ill, , the Mirror reports. But after sixty years of sitting in his own dirt, exasperated villagers forced him into a bathroom to wash, a local official revealed.

Iranian stage agency news confirmed Amou's fear of the deadly shower had come true after he coincidentally died on October, 23 in the village of Dejgah, just months after his first cleanse in sixty years. The elderly man who was also afraid of eating fresh food now has a documentary based on his unconventional lifestyle which explores his bizarre diet of rotting porcupines and the reason why he chose to neglect his personal hygiene for six decades of his life.

The documentary reveals Mr Haji initially began to become unclean as a young man after he started suffering from emotional problems which inevitably became worse after his dirtiness left him isolated. As well as his aversion to cleanliness, he also feared fresh food and drink, thinking it too would make him unwell.

Instead, his favourite food was rotting porcupine and he opted to only drink water from an oil can lined with rust. Mr Haji spent most of his life in the same village, which is in the southern province of Fars, where locals built him an open shack to live in.

They constructed the abode after seeing him sleeping in a hole in the ground. He also preferred to smoke animal faeces from an old pipe rather than normal tobacco.

His life was immortalised in a short documentary film called "The Strange Life of Amou Haji" in 2013. If Mr Haji's claims of 60 years without a wash is true, it would make him the world's dirtiest man.

An Indian man called Kailash Singh, 67, claimed to have not showered for 39 years, trailing Mr Haji by 21 years.
