World Population Day: Theme, History, Significance and Interesting Facts

Every year on July 11, World Population Day is commemorated to increase public awareness of concerns related to population growth. It is observed that the United Nations Development Programme created World Population Day in 1989, when there were 5 billion people on the planet. Its purpose, which has been to raise awareness of population control solutions. In 2022, the population of the globe will reach 8 billion, according to the United Nations Population Fund.

The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Governing Council created World Population Day in 1989. The heightened interest in the observance of "Five Billion Day" on July 11, 1987, served as the impetus for this holiday as the population crossed 5 billion that day. The day was originally marked on July 11, 1990, in more than 90 countries.
