World No 1779 Robert Dinwiddie makes building career decision after Open heroics

Part-time golfer Robert Dinwiddie admits he will continue working in the building trade despite his Open heroics.

The Wandsworth golfer helped in lockdown with a pal’s construction business and has continued ever since. But the qualifier thrived at St Andrews where he made the cut at The Open for the first time in three attempts. The 39-year-old had previously played on the European Tour but now only plays part-time.

A final round 69 left the Englishman four-under par but he is not about to down tools yet. World No.1779 Dinwiddie admitted: “If I can be of help to them, getting jobs started or finished or whatever it is, then I'll still help them out.

“But I'll maybe try and get some of the other guys to do all the heavy lifting. I've got three more Challenge Tour starts for sure in Ireland, Finland, and Belgium later in the year.

“That's still in the diary and I’ll still try to keep my game as sharp as I can. It's a good confidence boost to play well in this kind of environment because I haven't been in it much for a long time.

“It’s been a lot of golf with all the qualifying and here. I have felt it physically this week. It's important that I look after myself leading up to these other events.”

Earlier in the tournament, speaking exclusively to Mirror Sport , Dinwiddie had made a promise to his daughter to get her a new trampoline should he land the biggest pay-day of his career.

"My daughter Beatrice was out and so were other family and friends. To see her gave me a boost coming off the back of 13th particularly," he said after the first day.

“Well done to her staying up until 10.30pm which is probably three hours past her bedtime. She will have her heart set on a whole lot if I do well. She is well into her gymnastics and would probably want a new bar and trampoline."
