World No. 172 beats second seed Daniil Medvedev in French Open 1st round.

Thiago Seyboth Wild has caused the biggest shock of the French Open so far by defeating world number two Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller.

The Brazilian came into the match as a huge outsider having never won a match at a Grand Slam. He didn't even qualify for Roland Garros last year.

It was also the first time Seyboth Wild had ever competed at a four or five set match at Grand Slam.

He got off to an impressive start by winning the first set on a tie-break before faltering in a second 'breaker in set two. Former Grand Slam winner Medvedev then dominated set three and was expected to see the match out from there. However the Brazilian fought back to win the last two sets 6-3, 6-4 to record a famous victory.

Speaking to former professional Fabrice Santoro afterwards the 23 year-old had this to say,

"I mean it was really tough, I started cramping at the end of the second set. I couldn't really serve they way I wanted to but I could do my best, just use my mental [strength] and try to play my best Tennis and it worked".

When asked about his plans for his day off tomorrow he said, "I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go to the court, dunno if my coach will let me rest all day. He's a pretty tough guy who likes to be on the court all of the time. That's the way Tennis works, you stay on the court and work hard and you get the reward".

For Medvedev, it's a crushing blow as he attempts to wrestle back the world No.1 ranking which he last held in September 2022. That position is currently held by last year's US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz who plays Japan's Taro Daniel in the second round tomorrow. Two-time Roland Garros winner Novak Djokovic plays Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in round two on Wednesday evening.

Seyboth Wild's reward for his victory is a second round clash with either Guido Pella or Quentin Halys.
