World media react after Celtic hammer Rangers as Gio van Bronckhorst 'lost his mind' and ball boy mischief goes global

The dust has barely settled on a whirlwind night in Glasgow but the verdicts from across the globe have been steadily rolling.

Celtic's derby victory over Rangers set a fire under their title ambitions as they blew their rivals away with a swaggering performance.

Celtic Park was rocking and the reigning Premiership champions had no answer to the intensity of Ange Postecoglou's side.

Reo Hatate bagged a double before Liel Abada notched the third to clinch a first derby victory since 2019 for the Parkhead club.

This fixture always draws worldwide attention, perhaps never more so with an increasingly international cast of characters taking on starring roles.

Here, Record Sport provides a round-up of world media reaction.

Given his illustrious heritage, Romanian outlets tend to keep an eye out for Ianis Hagi, and his absence was noted back in his homeland.

"Missing Ianis Hagi, injured, Glasgow Rangers were outscored (0-3) by Celtic Glasgow and lost first place in the standings of the elite division of Scottish football.

"Scheduled for the 22nd round, the derby was dominated by the hosts, who quickly opened the scoring through Reo Hatate (min. 5). The same player increased the lead in the 42nd minute, and two minutes later Liel Abada set the final score.

"This is Rangers ' first defeat after 13 games and also the first of coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on the bench of the Scottish champions.

Optus Sport (Australia)

There's been a keen focus Down Under on Postecoglou's exploits in Scottish football these past few months, and last night's statement result was heralded as a win for both the manager and Aussie football at large.

"This was a true Angeball masterclass. Celtic set the intensity of this contest and Rangers could not match them. Celtic Park heaved and revelled in the style their manager has implemented.

"Eight months ago, Postecoglou walked into a side that was in disarray and faced a band of supporters who questioned his credentials and complained at the appointment of a manager they weren’t familiar with.

"Now, they are top of the league, having demolished a Rangers side who finished 25 points clear last season as they swept all before them.

"Celtic now sit a point clear of Rangers atop the Scottish Premiership. There may be 14 matches still to play, but a victory like this will bring supreme confidence they can go all the way. After all, they have not lost a league match since September 20 and only three in total.

"Although, the arrival of Aaron Ramsey at Rangers, on loan from Juventus, could provide an interesting subplot in what is set up to be a box office finish to the campaign, provided he can rediscover form after so long without regular football."

Marca (Spain)

The famous Spanish newspaper picked up on Hatate quickly ascending to hero status and the frenzied atmosphere between Celtic's second and third goals.

"Reo Hatate continued to endear himself to the Celtic supporters and kept his bright start to life in Scotland going, opening the scoring with a nicely-taken effort from the edge of the box in the opening minutes.

"The Japanese added his second with another from outside the area before half time, which led to Celtic Park erupting.

"While all of the people in attendance were still jubilantly jumping around in celebration of their side's second goal, Liel Abada made it three. Hatate was again involved, this time delivering a cross from the left that Abada converted. In four games for the club, Hatate now has three goals and an assist.

"With Rangers having ended Celtic's hopes of winning ten straight titles last season, the Hoops are now back on top and with a one-point lead over the Teddy Bears."

Gekisaka.jp (Japan)

With no fewer than four Japanese players in the Celtic squad, the Japanese press have more than the occasional eye on Scottish football these days.

No prizes for guessing who they singled out for this one, however.

"A traditional Old Firm derby by 2nd place Celtic and 1st place Rangers with 2 points difference. It was the flagman (Hatate) who played the leading role in the remarkable battle.

(SNS Group)

"He picked up a spilled ball from the right corner kick in the 5th minute of the first half, scored a middle shot on his right foot to the right of the goal, and took the first shot.

"At 12:42, he received a pass from forward Liel Abada on the right in front of the PA and stabbed into the right corner of the goal again with his right foot. The momentum did not stop, and at 12:44, an accurate cross was supplied with the left foot from a deep position on the left side. He directed Abada's third point and decided the game almost in the first half.

"The flag bearer, who performed a spectacular performance at his first Old Firm derby, was replaced in the 27th minute of the second half. A standing ovation took place on the stand when leaving the pitch."

RTL (France)

There was amusement in France's media with the Celtic ball boys and their antics at the expense of Allan McGregor.

Footage captured the Rangers keeper being taunted after the home side's opener and then having a ball kicked away from him as he tried to retrieve it after the interval.

"Celtic struck a blow on Wednesday evening during the 22nd day of the Scottish Premiership by largely beating Rangers (3-0) to take control of Scottish D1 football at the expense of its great rival Glasgow.

(SNS Group)

"Celtic , deprived of a tenth consecutive title last season by Rangers, took a little revenge by dominating their historic rival. The Japanese Reo Hatate scored twice (5th, 42nd) and the Israeli Liel Abada (44th) sealed the outcome of the match even before half-time. To achieve victory, the locals were also able to count on the help of the ball boys.

"These young fans have indeed made the buzz on social networks due to a few unexpected gestures. On the first goal, we see in particular two boys chambering the Rangers goalkeeper. Later, a collector will clear a ball further to prevent the Rangers from being able to leave too quickly to attack the opposing goals. "

MSN Sport (Finland)

Glen Kamara's half-time withdrawal surprised some in Finland's media. The midfielder was arguably one of Rangers' better players during a dismal first period but he made way for Ryan Jack.

MSN in Finland described Van Bronckhorst as having "lost his mind" during a first derby as a manager.

"Many fans were hit on the head after seeing Kamara on a break, as he was the only player who hadn't completely embarrassed his jersey. A special exchange from Van Bronckhorst, who lost his mind in his first Old Firm, Kamara’s assessment was heard.

"Celtic won the first half of the shot towards the goal 7-1 and could have led the match fairly. Rangers scored the only goal in the second half. Van Bronckhorst, who experienced his first defeat as Rangers coach, admitted to giving a fire speech in the booth after the match."
