World Cup yellow card and suspension rules after England vs France and Morocco red card

With the World Cup final just over a week away, players still in with a chance of playing for football's biggest prize are aware about the fact that it's not a good time to pick up a suspension.

This year's competition has produced some shock results, but most of the countries originally tipped to be in with a chance of winning it all still remain in the competition. The quarter-finals have already thrown up plenty of surprises and controversy, however.

Tournament favourites Brazil were knocked out in shocking fashion after Croatia beat Tite's side on penalties to secure their place in the semi-finals. Argentina were involved in a heated clash against the Netherlands but Lionel Messi helped his nation progress into the last four as a record number of yellow cards were brandished during the tie.

Morocco added to the drama as they beat Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals, but Walid Cheddira was sent off and will miss the semi-final. Gareth Southgate's Three Lions then suffered heartbreak, losing 2-1 to France as Harry Kane missed a penalty with the chance to level things up.

Although players will be eager to be at their best both technically and physically, they will be concerned about picking up a suspensions ahead of a potential semi-final and then of course, a final. However, the rules have changed somewhat from years gone by. So, with that in mind, football.london have taken a look at everything you need to know ahead of this weekend's action.

Yellow card rules explained

Players are suspended for the next match at the finals if they collect two yellow cards or a red card - but there are points during the tournament when they are given a clean slate regardless of the cards they have picked up. Yellow card accumulation did carry over after qualification from the group stage meaning that yellow cards did count while competing in the Round of 16 and will do so for the quarter-final.

That being said, unlike in other years, players will not miss the World Cup final if they've been booked previously. That's because a player's record after the quarter-final will be reset, meaning only a red card would prevent them from missing the final.

That's particularly good news for England fans, too. Southgate's side are yet to pick up a booking at the tournament, so unless there's a red card at the weekend, no-one will be missing from a potential semi-final with either Morocco or Portugal.
