World Cup stadiums in Qatar: Full guide to eight venues and where England will play

The 2022 Qatar World Cup will be the home to a whole host of new stadiums that many fans across the world will not have seen before.

All eight of the venues are built within 21 miles of central Doha, the capital city of Qatar, but seven of them are set to undergo major changes. Some will see their capacities reduced while others are being taken down completely after the completion of the tournament.

Football.london looks at all eight of the World Cup stadiums, including how many spectators they hold, where they are located and which games they will be hosting.

Lusail Stadium

The Lusail Stadium is the poser-boy of arenas for the Qatar World Cup. It holds 80,000 people and will play host to 10 matches across the tournament, including the final on December 18. Many of the seats after the tournament are being taken out and being handed over to developing countries.

Stand-out group games: Argentina vs Mexico, Cameroon vs Brazil

Al Bayt Stadium

With a 60,000 capacity, the Al Bayt Stadium is the second-largest on offer at the tournament. It will host the first mach of the competition between Qatar and Ecaudor on Sunday, November 20 before showcasing England's clash against the USA and one of the semi-finals. It will have a retractable roof to keep out the heat if the temperatures become too overwhelming.

Stand-out group games: England vs USA, Spain vs Germany

Stadium 974

This wonderfully named arena has been built from shipping containers – 974 of them to be exact! It will only host matches up until the Last-16 before being dismantled. Given the way it has been manufactured, it should come as no surprise to learn that it is one of the three smallest stadiums in the competition.

Al Thumama Stadium

The 40,000-seater stadium in Doha looks remarkable from the outside. It will host eight matches, including a quarter-final clash, before it loses half of its capacity after the conclusion of the tournament. A mosque and a hotel are set to be built in its absence.

Stand-out group games: Senegal vs Netherlands, Spain vs Costa Rica

Khalifa International Stadium

This is one of the older stadiums in the country. Built in 1976, the Khalifa International Stadium is the home of the Qatar national team. It has undergone significant renovation since that day and it is set to host eight matches, including the third-place play-off.

Stand-out group games: England vs Iran, Japan vs Spain

Education City Stadium

Holding just over 45,000 spectators, the Education City Stadium will host eight World Cup matches, two of which will be knock-out matches. it is located just outside the centre of Doha and it had been built before Qatar had been named as World Cup hosts and it has been dubbed "the diamond in the desert".

Located just outside the centre of Doha, the Education City Stadium will host eight matches throughout the World Cup, including two knockout round fixtures. It has been nicknamed 'the diamond in the desert' as it is designed to glisten by day and glow at night and was already constructed prior to Qatar being named as 2022 hosts.

Stand-out group games: Tunisia vs France, South Korea vs Portugal

Ahmad bin Ali Stadium

Located in Al Rayyan, and initially dubbed the Al-Rayaan Stadium, the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium will host Wales against England as one of its eight matches. The 40,000 capacity stadium is particularly close to the desert so temperatures could be hot.

Al Janoub Stadium

The Al Janoub Stadium will win plaudits for its innovative cooling system and retractable roof. It resides in the city of Al Wakrah, holds 40,000 fans and will host seven matches in the tournament, but it will not feature any game after the last-16. Again, like other stadiums in the country, its capacity will be halved after the end of the competition.
