World Cup security worker in intensive care after fall from 'significant height' at Doha stadium

A World Cup security worker is in intensive care after a "serious fall" while on duty at the Lusail Stadium.

Qatar's Supreme Committee responsible for the organising of the 2022 tournament said an urgent investigation is taking place into the "circumstances leading to the fall". The incident occurred after Argentina's quarter-final win against the Netherlands and one observer reported the fall was from a "significant height", according to the Guardian.

The worker is reportedly in a "stable but critical" condition and will continue to be paid while he is in recovery. The Lusail Stadium is Qatar's flagship arena and was one of several to be built explicitly for the 2022 World Cup.

The Supreme Committee said in a statement: "On Saturday December 10, a security guard at Lusail Stadium suffered a serious fall while on duty. Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital's intensive care unit via ambulance.

"He remains in a stable but critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this time, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

"The host country is investigating the circumstances leading to the fall as a matter of urgency. He will continue to receive his salary in full while receiving medical care."

The quarter-final tie was also marked by further tragedy as 48-year-old Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known football writers in the United States, died early on Saturday while covering it. The American journalist, credited with boosting the sport's profile across the Atlantic, reportedly collapsed in the media pen during the match.
