The first round of group stage fixtures of the 2022 Qatar World Cup is now complete and there have been a few notable shock results along the way.
Argentina's stunning 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia dominated headlines, as did Germany 's loss at the hands of Japan by the same score-line. However, for other tournament giants it has simply been a case of business as usual - with the likes of England, Brazil, France and Spain all registering dominant wins after match-day one.
As the second batch of contests prepare to take place on Friday, Mirror Football has analysed how each team in the tournament has fared as the groups start to take shape - with some teams potentially able to secure qualification to the knockout stages after match-day two.
Group A:
HAVE YOUR SAY! Who will win the Qatar World Cup? Comment below.
Netherlands - Have got past their sternest test and should now top the group providing they can find a way past Ecuador - but will need to be better than their first outing. Louis van Gaal admitted his side were "sloppy" on the ball while star man Frenkie de Jong conceded he was below his best. However, they still got off to a good start and Cody Gakpo looks fresh enough to fire them into the knockouts with confidence. - 7/10
Ecuador - Their 2-0 win over hosts Qatar got the tournament underway as a brace for former West Ham and Everton star Enner Valencia proved enough to hand the South American outfit all three points. An impressive enough start, but the lack of quality in the opposition may have had something to do with that. - 6/10.
Senegal - Many expected more from the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions in their opening game, but they failed to really lay a glove on the Netherlands. Any slip ups against Ecuador on Monday could spell the end of their hopes of progression into the knockout rounds. - 4/10
Qatar - Abysmal opening day performance, minimal chance of getting it out of the group - Netherlands will be out to boost their goal difference when the sides meet. - 1/10.
Group B:
England - Gareth Southgate's side enjoyed the best possible start when they made light work of Iran, battering them 6-2 thanks in large part to some fantastic performanes from their younger stars. Bukayo Saka netted a brace while Jude Bellingham bagged his first goal for the Three Lions - both players are expected to start and play a big part against the USA and beyond. - 9/10
Wales - The Welsh sit second in Group B after their first World Cup game in 64 years ended in a draw when they took on the USA. Gareth Bale netted a crucial equaliser from the penalty spot to cancel out Timothy Weah's opener, so Rob Page will be looking at Monday's clash with Iran as their best chance of earning three points. - 5/10
USA - The Americans tend to spring a few surprises when participating on the world stage and who better to get one over on than their rivals based on the other side of the pond in England. Southgate should be wary of the athleticism of Gregg Berhalter's side. - 6/10
Iran - Battered by England, Iran were by no means group favourites but many expected better. Defeat against Wales would confirm their failure to get out of the group stages. - 2/10.
Group C:
Saudi Arabia - Ranked outside of the top 50, Herve Renard's side enjoyed one of the biggest World Cup upsets in recent memory when they toppled Lionel Messi's Argentina on match-day one. Saudi Arabia will now look at the clash against Poland on Saturday as a genuine chance to book their place in the last 16. - 10/10
Poland - Talismanic forward Robert Lewandowski fluffed his lines from the penalty spot against Mexico during their 0-0 draw and will be looking to make up for it with his first ever World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia. - 5/10
Mexico - Struggled to put Poland under any real sustained pressure and will be up against it when they take on what is likely to be a fired up Argentina. - 4/10
Argentina - Tipped by many as tournament favourites, Messi and co were expected to make light work of Saudi Arabia, but instead were on the wrong end of a remarkable score-line. They simply cannot afford any more errors when they face Mexico if their seven-time Ballon d'Or winning forward is ever going to get his hands on the World Cup. - 2/10
Group D:
France - After falling behind to Australia early on, Les Bleus got their act together and ran riot against the Soceroos as an Olivier Giroud brace inspired France to a 4-1 win. Kylian Mbappe put in the kind of performance that should strike fear into defenders across the competition. - 8/10
Tunisia - Played out a bore draw with Denmark and conceded a few chances that could have seen them punished on another day. - 4/10
Denmark - Viewed by some as the tournament's dark horses after their run to the semi-final in last year's European Championships, Christian Eriksen and his teammates really should have put Tunisia to the sword. Improvement is needed against France on Saturday. - 5/10
Australia - Battered by France as was expected after a bright start, the Socceroos' best chance of getting any points on the board will come against Tunisia. 2/10
Group E:
Spain - La Roja looked back to their best in their opening game 7-0 rout over Costa Rica, with Luis Enrique's men enjoying the most dominant display seen in the first round of fixtures. Should they beat Germany and results elsewhere go their way, not only will they secure their passage into the next round - they would also eliminate a rival in the process. - 10/10
Japan - Much like Saudi Arabia, Japan were the talk of the town after their sensational, come-from-behind, underdog win against Germany. Another victory against Costa Rica would make Group E particularly interesting. - 9/10
Germany - Hansi Flick cut a dejected figure on the touchline as the Japanese squad sprinted onto to the pitch as the full-time whistle blew. The Germany boss knows his side cannot afford another defeat against in-form Spain otherwise they could suffer a second successive group stage elimination. - 1/10
Costa Rica - A disastrous performance that saw them look second best from the first whistle. Unlikely to make it out of the group. - 1/10
Group F:
Belgium - In what is surely the last hurrah for Belgium's golden generation, Roberto Martinez's men stumbled over the line against Canada. Armed with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard, they will need to show more against Morocco on Sunday. - 6/10
Croatia - Looked a shadow of the side that reached the last four in Russia back in 2018, age could be catching up to the likes of Luka Modric and co. A dismal display against Morocco that ended 0-0. - 3/10
Morocco - With Croatia out the way, the African outfit could have their eye on trying to sneak second - especially if they can enjoy a shock upset against Belgium. - 4/10
Canada - Appearing at their first World Cup in more than three decades, Alphonso Davies' missed penalty robbed them of their chance of a first ever goal in the competition. Undeniably deserved more than they got in their 1-0 defeat by Belgium - 4/10.
Group G:
Brazil - After a slow start against Serbia, the Selecao swiftly found their rhythm and Tottenham talisman Richarlison netted a stellar brace that included a sensational acrobatic volley. Switzerland up next should prove a similarly stern test, but Tite has plenty of quality to call upon. - 8/10
Switzerland - Ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cameroon, will need to up their game against Brazil but there are shoots of optimism with an in-form Granit Xhaka in midfield. - 6/10
Cameroon - Impressive in possession, Rigobert Song's men struggled to find the final ball to really punish Switzerland. Serbia up next is an absolute must-win. - 4/10
Serbia - Despite their valiant defensive effort, Brazil's quality eventually told and boss Dragan Stojkovic bemoaned his side's fitness levels after the game. - 5/10
Group H:
Portugal - Cristiano Ronaldo responded to the relentless speculation over his club future in the way he knows best by opening the scoring for his side. Clear defensive fragilities for Fernando Santos to mull over before their clash with Uruguay on Monday. - 7/10.
South Korea - A completely forgettable 0-0 draw with Uruguay failed to really tell us anything about their prospects in the coming days. - 5/10.
Uruguay - While the South American giants came incredibly close to snatching all three points via Diego Godin, they too looked way off the pace and will need to sharpen up for the face-off with Portugal. - 4/10
Ghana - Despite some clear attacking talent and Thomas Partey's techincal prowess in the middle of the park, Ghana's shaky back-line looks like it will cost them in the long-run. - 4/10
