Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium and Los Angeles’ $5.5billion SoFi Stadium have been confirmed among the 16 venues for the 2026 World Cup.
The tournament, which will be staged across the USA, Canada and Mexico, will be the first to be shared by three host nations and first to feature 48 teams.
16 venues have been selected in total, 11 of them in the US, with three in Mexico and two in Canada.
The Azteca Stadium hosted both the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, but will not have that honour this time, with every match from the quarter-finals onwards to be played in the US, though a decision over specific venues will not be made until nearer the time.
SoFi Stadium, meanwhile, was opened in 2020 and is home to both the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers NFL teams. The stadium, which also hosted this year’s Super Bowl, was preferred to LA’s Pasadena Bowl, the stage for the 1994 final.
Six bidding cities were culled from the shortlist of potential hosts, including America’s capital Washington D.C., which had expressed a joint interest alongside Baltimore.
In Canada, Vancouver and Toronto will host matches, while Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara are the Mexican cities chosen.
Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle are the American hosts.
