Kylian Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup since 1966 as France lost their crown to Argentina in a thrilling final.
The three goals took the 23-year-old up to eight for the tournament and saw lift the Golden Boot ahead of Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Lionel Messi.
Messi himself had scored twice in an enthralling encounter inside Lusail Stadium, putting Argentina into the lead twice either side of Mbappe’s quick-fire brace in the second-half.
The France forward then levelled the scores again with a penalty deep into extra time to move one goal ahead of Messi and take his total tally of World Cup goals to 12, equal with the great Pele.
Olivier Giroud and Julian Alvarez both scored four goals in Qatar, while it was a prolific tournament for England despite their quarter-final exit, with both Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka scoring three times.
