World Cup 2022 prize money revealed: How much can England win in Qatar?

England haven't won the World Cup since 1966 - everyone knows this. But in recent years, they've been getting closer and closer to winning a major tournament for the first time since then and it's entirely possible for this tournament to be the one.

While the World Cup 2022 hasn't gone without significant controversy both in the build-up and which has continued into the tournament's matches, to cap it off with an England win could be a fantastic way to cap off the year.

Along with a slew on honorary titles which would be guaranteed if they do bring football home, the players could bring something else home - a lot of prize money if they go all the way.

So just how much can England win if they win the World Cup this year and become the first Three Lions side since 1966 to lift the World Cup trophy? Chronicle Live took a look at what the financial implications could be if they boys bring it home from Qatar...

World Cup 2022 prize money

Just for qualifying for the group stage of the tournament, every team earns £1.2 million which might not seem like to much in the grand scheme of things for bigger nations like England but for smaller teams, the money just from appearing in the group stage can help grassroots in their country a lot.

But by making it out of the group stage and qualifying for the knockout stage, the prize money grows by quite a bit. It makes no difference if you win your group or finish second but by making the knockouts, teams can earn an additional £11 million for a total of £12.2 million.

If England were then to reach the quarter-final, they'd earn £14 million in addition to their £1.2 million for qualifying for the tournament bring their tournament total to £15.2 million which would match their run in Russia 2018.

Once you get to the semi-final stage, this is where rewards massively start to increase. An incredible £21m is guaranteed at the very least - and that is if you lose both the final four clash and the third/fourth-placed playoff. Should you lose the semi-final but prevail victorious at that stage, a cool £23m would be banked.

For making the semi-finals, £21 million would be guaranteed in prize money. If England were to repeat their semi-final loss, but go one step better than Russia 2018 by winning the third/fourth-placed playoff match they'd win £23 million.

If England make it to the final and win it, how much do they earn?

Of course, they lost 2-1 to Croatia four years ago but if they were to take the next step to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 on December 18th, the Three Lions would be rewarded with £25 million for winning in the semi-final stage.

The country would probably be sent into raptures if they were to go all the way, but if England were to win he World Cup, they'd earn themselves £36.2 million in prize money but they'd also write their names down in English folklore.

Whether Southgate and his men can achieve the dream of so many remains to be seen, but if they can, they'll enjoy a nice pay day at the end of it.
