World Cup 2022 kits ranked: England, Germany and France beaten to first place

The World Cup is edging closer as England look to end their agonising wait for a major trophy. Gareth Southgate's side are hoping to go one further after they were beaten on penalties at Wembley by Italy in the European Championships.

Going into the historic tournament, the Three Lions suffered a sobering campaign in the UEFA Nations League as they were relegated from the top tier. Reigning World Cup holders, France, are ranked third in the FIFA World Rankings.

Record winners Brazil, who have been widely tipped to end their 20-year wait for success on the global stage, are among the pre-tournament favourites as they boast the likes of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and rising Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes.

Whilst there will be battles across the pitch throughout the tournament, national teams will be looking to score points with fans for their strips at the World Cup.

Without further ado, how do the strips rank among the rest?

10. Ghana (away)

A surprising design for the world stage and one that Puma may never go for again as it goes across the manufacturer's representation at the World Cup. Ghana's away strip is red with a darker vertical strip down the middle but what's striking is the box in the middle of the kit which features the country's crest at the top with the number below.

9. France (home)

The 2018 World Cup winners are in this list for their traditional design which features one button on a collarless kit - two things which should never be near a football strip.

It features golden additions to the sponsor and iconic France Football Federation icon. But for the holders, it is underwhelming, especially given the opportunity for Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema to stamp his legacy on the international front.

8. Denmark (home)

Denmark, sponsored by hummel, have opted to go for an all-red strip with inspiration taken from their 1992 European Championships win. The kit features a number of messages including “FOR DANMARK” on the inner collar, while the inner shirt has the message “EN DEL AF NOGET STØRRE” (A Part of Something Bigger) on it.

Sponsor hummel announced they toned down for the making of the kit as it does not want its branding to be visible during the World Cup in Qatar because of the country's human rights record.

7. Saudi Arabia (away)

Saudi Arabia's kit manufacturer, Nike, have continued to pull out the stops on their kits as they enter just their fourth FIFA World Cup.

The change strip has an all-over leaf print that follows the concepts from their kits in 2018 and 2020. There are blends of green and dark green across the design with white additions on the sponsor and Saudi Arabia badge.

6. Japan (home)

Japan's home strip is certainly an eye-catching one as it features Origami and the art of self-expression. It has been said the glitched graphic design was inspired by the three-legged crow which represents speed and the art of Origiami.

With a colourway of white, blue and red trim on the side of the strip, Japan will be hoping to go beyond the Round of 16 for the first time in their history.

5. Ecuador (away)

Ecuador end their eight-year absence from the World Cup for this month's tournament. They enter the competition with their traditional yellow kit but the design of their away kit is the catalyst for their appearance in this list.

The geometric pattern on the front features a mixture of navy blue and light blue with white trim. The country's flag features on the sleeve whilst the nation's badge is recoloured in silver.

4. South Korea (away)

South Korea spearheaded by Spurs Heung-min Son will be donning one of the most flamboyant kits at this winter's World Cup as Nike continue the bold theme for this strip.

With a black base and white logos, with multiple colours slashed across the kits is certainly one that will draw attention. The kit has taken inspiration from the Taegeuk symbol on the country's flag which features blue and red.

3. England (away)

Could England's quest to end their 66-year wait to win the World Cup end wearing this kit? All will be revealed in mid-December. For their 2022 World Cup kit, they have taken inspiration from their Italia 90 kit.

Featuring the collar with a knitted Three Lions logo, the strip has a red base with navy blue trim and colour plus light blue tips which are featured on the manufacturer and the badge.

2. Germany (away)

Adidas continued to produce kits for Germany as Hansi Flick looks to replicate their 2016 feat. The bold cherry red and black colourway features an all over pattern, one which will go down in the ages as a classic kit in the years to come.

1. Mexico (home)

Mexico have staked a claim for both their home and away kit to feature in this list, however, for this author the home kit takes the top spot.

Keeping with the traditional green kit, the 2022 instalment has a zig-zag design with intricate lines representing the feathered headdress of the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl. In another brilliant touch, the three stripes Adidas logo adds that extra bit of spice as their iconic lettering remains omitted.
