World Cup 2010: The best pictures of Ghana v Uruguay

Uruguay v Ghana: Soccer - 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa
Ghana, the last of the African nations in the World Cup, have every reason to be cheerful ahead of tonight's quarter-final match with Uruguay. But that doesn't explain why this guy is dressed like a bull that's been on a rampage through the paint aisles of B&Q

Ah, time for some action photos now. Here's Diego Forlán - who's been perhaps the finest striker on display in the tournament this year - leaving a Ghanaian opponent in a spin

Kevin Prince Boateng seems to be getting his jump all wrong here. Two feet lower, Kevin, and you might just get your head on it

Ghana score! Don't ask to see any pictures - there aren't any gooduns. Just make do with this celebratory shot in which the scorer, Sulley Muntari (second right), leads his team-mates in a little dancing workshop. His goal was an unexpected 40-yarder which caught the keeper (and the snappers) off guard. It's 1-0 at half-time

It's a great start to the second half for Uruguay as Diego Forlán has a pop from distance and gets lucky as the ball goes left, right, up and down - the sort of motion you'd expect from a 99p blow-away ball - before beating the keeper. 1-1

Uruguay v Ghana: Uruguay's Suarez
In the dying seconds, a goalmouth scramble sees Dominic Adiyiah's header blocked on the line by Suárez. Only one slight problem, Suárez saves it with his hands - and he's not a goalkeeper. Penalty to Ghana!

Asamoah Gyan steps up and, with the last kick of extra-time, he smacks the cross-bar! Dear oh dear, the poor lad ...

And so, to penalties (the regular variety) we go. The writing seems to be on the wall for Ghana when Uruguay's goalkeeper saves from John Mensah. It's a terrible penalty - just look how easy it is for the keeper to palm it to safety. Uruguay's Maxi Pereira then skies one, before Ghana's Adiyiah is foiled ... One kick left and it's down to the Uruguayan substitute Sebastián Abreu

Abreu runs up ... and chips it ... what a lunatic ... but the keeper's dived too soon and the ball nestles into the net. Abreu's audacity has made him a hero. Uruguay are through to the semis and Ghana are out!

Fernando Muslera has got every reason to go berserk after saving two penalties. But let's be honest, Suárez's libertine antics have really won this match

Ghana's Stephen Appiah drops to his knees in disbelief. Great drama it was, but utterly unjust. Uruguay are through to play Holland in the semis.
