WorkSafe investigating quad bike involvement in Western Australian farm death

Western Australia's work safety watchdog is investigating the death of a woman at a farm near the south-west town of Collie this morning.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said the 35-year-old farmhand was believed to have been thrown from a quad bike.

"The woman was reported to have been thrown from a quad bike while rounding up cattle, which resulted in fatal injuries," she said.

"WorkSafe investigators will examine the circumstances of [the] incident with a view to ensuring compliance and preventing future incidents of a similar nature."

WorkSafe WA Commissioner Darren Kavanagh said any work-related death was a tragedy, and relayed his sincere condolences to the woman's family and other workers at the farm.

Farm death inquiry underway

It is the state's 15th farm death in 18 months, and the fourth workplace death across WA in the past fortnight.

It comes as an inquiry into farm deaths gets underway in WA, with hearings held in Bunbury today.

Farmers and safety experts in attendance raised concerns about the lack of knowledge around the safe operation of quad bikes, saying it was a leading cause of farm injuries.

WAFarmers president John Hassell said the death was a tragedy and his condolences went out to the woman's family.

He said more education was needed around the use of quad bikes.

"What I hope would happen when things like this happen is we look at it and understand how the accident happened and educate people on how to not to let that happen to them," Mr Hassell said.

"They do it in the aviation industry and we definitely have to do it in farming as well.

"There are so many things that we don't do every day, so many different things and if we're aware of it, then we are less likely to have it happen."

Workers were killed in separate incidents at mines in WA's Pilbara and Goldfields last week, while a 50-year-old man was killed at a work site in the Perth suburb of Bibra Lake on Tuesday.
