Neighbours have voiced their sadness as a 'terrible' fire took hold of a building in Bulwell. Firefighters from across Nottinghamshire were called to the incident in Kett Street just before 4am on Tuesday, February 28.
The blaze, which has now been extinguished, is understood to have involved a single storey building in the street, which is home to a laundry firm. Employees at the business told Nottinghamshire Live they are are already looking at new jobs due to the pressure of the cost of living crisis.
A woman who works there but did not wish to be named said: “It is terrible, I basically just lost my job. I worked there for just over a year.
"We have not been told anything yet but we feel like we need to apply for jobs. I was very happy with my job, so this is very sad.”
Another woman who works at the business added: “We have not been told anything yet but it is not like they are going to reopen in a hurry. We cannot just wait around.
“We started applying for jobs. With the cost of living crisis it just makes everything else more difficult.
“I do not even know if we are getting paid - we have only worked two weeks this month. I am scared because I need to put food on the table. I have got children, I’m really worried.”
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from across the county were called to the scene during the early hours. A spokesperson for the service confirmed crews were 'on top of the fire' by 5.30am.
At 7.30am just two crews remained on scene to dampen down the blaze. The service said in a statement: "The building is severely damaged, and we will likely be there for the remainder of the morning. A fire investigation will take place later today."
Other residents in the area have also shared their concerns about the fire. Shaun Wynter is a warehouse manager who lives in the area.
The 42-year-old said he was in the area on his break. He added: "I saw the road blocked off, but I just assumed it was something else.
"I saw the police cordon and the fire crews. The company has been here for years so it is a shame.”
Retired resident, Antony Rhodes, 66, said: “I did not hear or see anything last night. I have only seen the scene this morning.
“Obviously it is very sad for those who work there and lost their jobs. The company has been here for a long time - before I moved in. It is shocking.”
A neighbour in the area, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “I did not see any smoke or fire, but the blue lights woke me up last night. It is very sad for the staff there. Dreadful.”
