Work has started on a new market for Caerphilly built from shipping containers. The project, Ffos (moat in English) Caerffili, is expected to be completed in October or November
The Welsh Government is providing 58% of the project’s cost with a grant of £2.09m and loan of £600,000 from its Transforming Towns programme. The remainder of the funding will come from the local council and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
The first project in Caerphilly County Borough Council’s 2035 regeneration masterplan, Ffos Caerffili will provide 28 units for food and drink operators, independent shops and workspaces. It will also feature an external terrace allowing for outdoor dining, music concerts and events. It is being delivery by construction company Lancer Scott.
The council’s deputy leader, Sean Morgan, said: ““It’s great to see the development under way. We have worked closely with our partners at Welsh Government, and now that the shovels are in the ground, we can really get excited about Ffos Caerffili opening its doors later this year. The pandemic stalled many of our ambitious projects, but Ffos Caerffili shows our intention to deliver on projects throughout the borough.”
Minister for Climate Change, Julie James said: “Our transforming towns programme continues to deliver great results in our commitment and ambition to revitalise town centres across Wales, putting them at the heart of everything we do.”
