Work to commence in April on new Lanarkshire homes at former Philips site

Work is set to commence in the coming months on a brand new housing development in Hamilton.

Construction is expected to begin before the summer at the site of the former Philips Lighting factory in the town.

The estate, which will be named the Glow Garrens Development, will feature up to 166 new properties in the Hillhouse area.

Its name is in reference to the history of the Philips factory which served the town for over 70 years.

Local housebuilders Lovell confirmed their plans which will be carried out throughout 2022.

They will be on site in April and the development will be officially launched in May, with the first homes expected to be ready in late 2022.

The firm say the development will feature a range of private and social housing - 124 private and 42 "affordable" - Lovell confirmed.

Approval for the former industrial site to be turned into housing was given approval by South Lanarkshire Council last year.

In March 2021, demolition got underway to clear the land as preparations for work to commence on the major development began.

The iconic site of Philips employed thousands of men and women from the town for over 70 years.

And residents were saddened when Signify, formerly Philips Lighting, took the decision to shut up shop at the Hamilton factory in 2019.

The famed building on Wellhall Road had lain empty for nearly two years before being flattened.

After South Lanarkshire Council granted its approval, the demolition programme ran until August last year.

Now lies seven hectares of land at the site and planning permission in principle was later granted in 2021.

The land was being re-profiled before the new developers arranged to come in to create the new development.

Last year, Signify carried out a public consultation event to allow residents to find out more about the proposals made at the time.

An illustrative site layout included plans for two-storey detached, semi-detached and terraced houses as well as four-storey blocks of flats.

In November 2019, the plant – which used to make SOX (sodium with oxide) lamps – closed its doors for the last time after 72 years in Hamilton.

The remains of the iconic factory are now gone as the demolition programme concluded in 2021.

Lovell have already announced their Hamilton development on their website where prospective house-buyers can enquire about the new homes.

There, the company states: "The Glow Garren development in Hamilton provides a rare opportunity to purchase a beautiful home in one of Scotland’s most elegant and well-connected towns.

"Glow Garren is an attractive development offering a stunning collection of three, four and five bedroom homes of contemporary, energy-efficient homes designed to suit the way we live now."
