Work stress caused 26-year-old Anna’s death? Doctor, HR consultant weigh in

A 26-year-old chartered accountant from Kerala, Anna Sebastian Perayil, died in July, within four months of joining Ernst & Young’s Pune office. Her mother Anita Augustine blamed the work load and job-related stress for her death, fuelling public outrage over corporate work environments and demand for reassessment of workplace practices.

Anna reportedly experienced anxiety, insomnia, and physical strain after she began working with EY. Her workload included late-night tasks and weekend responsibilities, while her concerns about the lack of work-life balance were reportedly dismissed by her managers.

The News Minute’s Pooja Prasanna spoke to senior cardiologist Dr P Manokar and hiring firm TeamLease CEO Amit Jain about workplace practices, corporate work environments and the impact of work stress.
