Work set to modernise Pencoed library with community meeting room and new study space

Bridgend Council has announced that the Awen Cultural Trust has been awarded a grant from the Welsh Government to reconfigure and modernise Pencoed Library. The registered charity, which manages library services on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council will provide match funding to update furniture, as well as create a community meeting room and study space in the building.

They will also be installing solar panels on the south-facing roof to help create a more sustainable site, based on Penybont Road.

The plans for Pencoed Library, which will close later in the autumn and reopen in early 2023 for its 50th anniversary year include:

  • Updating static, old furniture with more mobile options so that the space can be used more flexibly for activities and events.
  • Creating a work/study space to support those working remotely or those who need quiet areas to concentrate on their school or studies.
  • Building a community meeting room for local groups and support services to use.

Cllr Rhys Goode is a cabinet member for well being and future generations and said the funding was fantastic news for the area.

He said: "This grant is fantastic news for Pencoed and the surrounding area. Libraries play an incredibly important part in our communities, for people of all ages and backgrounds.

"Our successful partnership with Awen will help us to create modern spaces that provide people with the services they most need, such as remote working areas, as well as welcoming spaces to read, work and socialise within the local community." You can read more of our stories from Bridgend here.
