Work on a new performance area in Kirkcudbright is nearing completion.
A stage, complete with canopy, is being constructed in the town’s Harbour Square after the old one reached the end of its life.
Kirkcudbright Development Trust (KDT) has led the project, with nearly £100,000 raised to fund the new structure.
Four organisations provided funds for the project – the SUEZ Communities Trust provided £35,681 with support also coming from the council, Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities and the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership Scheme.
KDT’s Rob Asbridge said: “Thanks to SUEZ the new covered stage will allow us to put on events in all weathers, extend the tourist season and benefit all local businesses.
A new stage was needed after the old wooden one started to rot.
The canopy means it can be used year-round by community groups, artists and performers.
SUEZ Communities Trust chairman Marek Gordon said: “The trust provides funding awards through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Kirkcudbright Development Trust.”
Last year, members of the town’s common good fund agreed to the 25 year lease of the area at Harbour Square needed for the stage for the nominal fee of £1.
Groups will be asked to make a donation in return for its use, allowing organisations with no income to use it for free.
