Phase 2 of Strand redevelopment to begin after postponement

A major road development project that was moved back due to Liverpool hosting the Eurovision Song Contest is set to begin this summer.

Last Autumn Liverpool City Council confirmed that the planned phase two redevelopment of The Strand would no longer go ahead when originally scheduled in the spring. A decision was made to amend the timeline for the multi-million pound project so it didn’t clash with the city’s hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Phase one of the works, completed at the tail end of 2021, saw the busy thoroughfare which runs through the city centre reduced from six lanes to four. A new segregated cycle lane was added along with improved infrastructure for pedestrians, including new trees, benches and crossings.

It was expected that the second phase of the £22m arm of the City Centre Connectivity Scheme would start by Spring of this year. This would include major changes between the James Street junction and Liver Street.

The ECHO understands that, with the Eurovision concluded, the first phase of the project will begin in around six weeks. The early phases starting this summer are said to focus on the design of the project.

This work will be one of the first steps taken before physical works take place. An announcement on the project is expected from Liverpool City Council in the early summer.

The work is expected to be a continuation of segregated cycle lanes, new traffic signal equipment at all junctions, road markings and traffic signs, LED street lights, street trees, drainage improvements and carriageway resurfacing.

The overall City Centre Connectivity Scheme - which included Lime Street, The Strand and demolishing flyovers - had been expected to cost the city around £47m when it was first announced, but has risen to around £66m. This figure rose to £55m come 2021, rising again in July last year.
