Work on major Edinburgh railway line to begin as bus services in place for weekend

Work begins this weekend on a major Edinburgh railway line, meaning some services have been switched to bus journey's instead.

The £4 million project that involves renewing the junction on the line between Edinburgh and Dundee will take place over the two remaining weekends in February, with the nature of the work meaning a closure of the line is necessary.

Network Rail are behind the project, with the junction near Leuchars station undergoing a major upgrade where engineers will be working around-the-clock to renew points and replace parts of the track.

On the weekend of Saturday 19 Sunday 20 February and Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February, replacement bus services will operate between Edinburgh and Dundee/Aberdeen.

Leuchars is the closest station to St Andrew's and the junction in question is vital for connecting train passengers between Edinburgh and Dundee and Aberdeen.

Network Rail say the work will help improve the reliability of the tracks and means the junction will not need to be renewed again for decades.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail route director for Scotland, said: "The work we are doing is part of a five-year, £4bn investment in our railway.

"We understand the inconvenience this work will cause to some passengers but renewing such a complex piece of our railway cannot be accomplished without a short-term closure of the line.

"Our engineers have carefully planned this project to be completed as quickly as possible and we are working hard alongside our train operators to keep passengers informed of the changes to services during this important investment in the railway."

Edinburgh passengers are being urged to check their journey before travelling, with more information on the affected services being available on the Network Rail website.
