Wordle fans ditch word game for new mystery country spin-off called 'Worldle'

Wordle fans are ditching the viral word game for a new mystery country spin-off called Worldle.

After being bought by the New York Times "for an undisclosed price in the low seven figures”, Wordle has come under heavy scrutiny for being "too hard" and "elitist".

Many users have since taken to social media to claim they've sworn off the game for good.

However, people are now putting their geography skills to the test with Worldle, a similar-style online game created by a French game developer.

The game was launched on January 30, 2022, and has already garnered more than half a million players.

More than half a million users have played Worldle since it was created in January 2022 (Worldle)

Users are given a map of a country or territory and have to make a guess. If they get it wrong, Worldle will tell you how close you are and give you the direction and distance from the right answer.

Just like Wordle, players only get six guesses to get the right answer or they lose. Users can also tweet their results via the cryptic green squares Twitter has recently been flooded with.

Worldle also allows users to increase the game's difficulty by hiding the country image or randomly rotating it.

"What? I've been wasting my time on Worldle when I could have been doing this?!" one person wrote.

"In other news Worldle > Wordle" another Twitter user commented.

What is Wordle?

For those who still haven't come across Wordle, the basic premise of the game is you have six chances to guess a random five letter word.

For each guess you make, the letters will turn yellow, grey or green. Yellow letters mean the letter is in the winning word, but in the wrong spot. Letters that turn grey mean that they aren't in the final word at all.

And, green letters mean the letter is correct and in the right spot for the winning word. If all the tiles turn green upon guessing the word in any of the six goes, you've got it right and won the day's Wordle puzzle.
