Wordle changes recommended starting phrase after bot upgrade

The recommended Wordle starting phrase has been changed following an upgrade.

It no longer suggests that you start with CRANE, instead opting for SLATE (or LEAST) as it gives the mobile game players who are guessing off of the top of their head a better chance.

The changes come after an upgrade to WordleBot, which is a "daily companion" that helps subscribing players with the word-guessing game.

CRANE was found to help the bot make guesses when it had a known list of possible solutions on hand, which most - with the exception of the most dedicated Wordle fans - will not have.

A post on website the New York Times, who bought Wordle earlier this year, explained the changes.

The post read: "WordleBot, the tool that sometimes uplifts you when you think your Wordle performance has been terrible, and sometimes chides you when you think you’ve played superbly, is changing."

"It won’t stop telling you what to do, but today we’re unveiling an update to its algorithm as well as new features."

The bot has now been updated to look at more than just five-letter words in an attempt to make it think more like a human would.

In thinking more like a human, it found that SLATE offered more options to players who are guessing. This will help the bot assign the probability of approximately 4,500 possible guesses that players can make.

The NYT has said that CRANE is still a great starter, but SLATE could be a helpful tool to add to your Wordle repertoire.

You can start using SLATE today, but to get hints and suggestions from WordleBot you have to be a paying Times Games, News, or All Access subscribers.
