Wor Flags pay tribute to Sir Bobby Robson with huge flag display at St James' Park

In front of a sell-out crowd at St James' Park, Wor Flags helped celebrate what would have been Sir Bobby Robson's 90th Birthday with a huge display in the East Stand.

A huge banner of Sir Bobby was flown across the stand in the moments before Newcastle United's game with Liverpool with the Toon legend's famous 'what is a club in any case?' quote also on show across the bottom tier.

One of Sir Bobby's favourite songs - Nessun Dorma - was also played as the players were welcomed onto the pitch. It was a fitting tribute to the former Newcastle manager who passed away in 2009 after a battle with cancer.

Wor Flags were approached to do the display before the season had even begun and were more than happy to oblige.

Flags from several of the clubs Sir Bobby played for and managed were also on display. FC Porto, the Portuguese club where Sir Bobby won the Premier Division twice in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 campaigns, sent their own flag over as did Sporting Lisbon, and Ipswich - with whom Sir Bobby won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup within 1981.

Some of Sir Bobby's family popped into St James' Park on Friday night to see Wor Flags setting up the display. A spokesman for Wor Flag told Chronicle Live: "This is a nice touch not only to celebrate his Newcastle career but his career as a whole. It's just a fantastic thing to do for an absolutely great bloke.

"When we look back over the recent history of Newcastle United, he was a huge part of that given it was the last time we were in the Champions League.

"The way Sir Bobby was about the region, Newcastle itself, right up until he left us he was a big part of Newcastle United and

football in Europe. For us, doing a tribute to Bobby was the right thing to do. The fact it falls on his 90th birthday is incredible. Good timing with a big game against Liverpool under the lights, and it's all just fallen right into place."
