Woolwich: Murder investigation launched after man stabbed on residential road

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Woolwich.

The victim, 23, was dropped off at a south London hospital and died from wounds believed to have been sustained in Brookhill Road about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

A section 60 order granting police more stop and search powers has been triggered in the area around the scene of the knifing.

Police are trying to trace the man’s next of kin after he died at just before 7.15pm.

A police statement said: “At 5.35pm police were called to Brookfield Road following reports of a stabbing. Officers attended and a crime scene was started but a victim could not be located.

“A short time later a man was dropped off at a south London hospital with stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at 7.11pm. Officers are in the process of contacting his next of kin.”

DCI Sal Minhas, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of this young man as they come to terms with his tragic death. We will do everything we can do support them.

“A dedicated team of detectives are working to establish exactly what happened and track down the people responsible. Officers will remain at the scene throughout the day and I would ask anyone with information about the incident to contact us immediately, no matter how minor the detail.

“Tackling violent crime remains a top priority for the Met. This incident is a stark reminder that we still have more to do in this area. We continue to work alongside the communities we serve to stop violence from happening in the first place.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Incident Room on 0208 721 4961 or phone 101 giving reference 5568/29SEP. Information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
