Wood vs Conlan - LIVE!
Leigh Wood produced the most extraordinary comeback to retain his WBA world featherweight title on Saturday night.
Defending the belt he claimed against Xu Can last summer for the first time in front of a sold-out home crowd in Nottingham, the 33-year-old unleashed a devastating 12th-round knockout of Michael Conlan to triumph against the odds.
Wood had been dropped by a huge overhand left at the end of the first round and was mostly second best thereafter, but rallied valiantly at the end of the 11th to produce a disputed knockdown of his own.
Behind on the judges’ scorecards, Wood then went for broke in the 12th round, sending Conlan through the ropes with a powerful right hand in a dramatic climax to an incredible fight.
The bout was immediately waved off amid concern for Conlan, who was transported backstage for further treatment. Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith later confirmed that he was conscious and stable as he arrived at hospital. Eddie Hearn added he was sitting up and talking as he awaited CT scans.
On the undercard, Terri Harper dominated on her lightweight debut to pick up the WBA Intercontinental title and Caoimhin Agyarko successfully defended his WBA International middleweight strap with an emphatic display.
