Big-scoring striker Chris Wood will make the cross-continental trip back to New Zealand as the All Whites look to secure their return to the FIFA World Cup.

New Zealand face Fiji and then the winner of Tahiti and New Caledonia on home soil this month knowing two wins will book their first World Cup slot in 16 years.

Wood, who has 18 goals this season for Premier League surprise packets Nottingham Forest, headlines a 23-man squad named on Tuesday by coach Darren Bazeley.

In all, 22 players are returning from the last phase of qualifying, when the Kiwis belted Vanuatu and Samoa by a combined score of 16-1, with Wood grabbing five of those goals.

The sole omission is Finn Surman, who has been allowed to stay with his club Portland Timbers "to prioritise the player's development with his club", according to a NZ Football statement.

Despite that, Bazeley said New Zealand "aren't taking anything for granted".

"This is the business end of the competition now and we know we have a job to do in these games to see us return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2010," he said.

"We have been really consistent with a lot of our selections over the last year to drive cohesion in the team so that when players arrive in camp they know what is expected, especially when we have limited time together and need to perform."

Jesse Randall joins the squad in Surman's place, one of six players from A-League Men leaders Auckland FC.

Wellington Phoenix have three stalwarts in the squad: Stalwarts Kosta Barbarouses, Alex Rufer and Tim Payne, as well as several ex-players including Sarpheet Singh and Liberato Cacace.

The forthcoming World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico and expanded to 48 nations, is the first to offer the Oceania confederation direct qualification.

As the region's heavyweights, New Zealand are the hottest of favourites to book their place at the tournament with a win in the final at Eden Park on Monday March 24.

The losers of that match could also still qualify, with FIFA also offering Oceania a slot into an inter-confederation playoff next year.

NEW ZEALAND WORLD CUP QUALIFYING SQUAD:

Kosta Barbarouses, Joe Bell, Tyler Bindon, Michael Boxall, Liberato Cacace, Max Crocombe, Matt Garbett, Eli Just, Callum McCowatt, Alex Paulsen, Tim Payne, Nando Pijnaker, Jesse Randall, Logan Rogerson, Storm Roux, Alex Rufer, Oli Sail, Sarpreet Singh, Tommy Smith, Marko Stamenic, Francis de Vries, Ben Waine, Chris Wood.
