Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has condemned the deaths of about 100 civilians after Israel's air strike on a school compound in Gaza City.

She joined the United States, several Arab states, Turkey, Britain and the European Union's foreign policy chief in denouncing the strike which targeted the compound sheltering displaced Palestinians, the Gaza Civil Emergency Service says.

Israel said around 20 militants had been operating at the Al-Tabeen school compound.

"Innocent Palestinians cannot continue to pay the price of defeating Hamas," Senator Wong said.

"Australia condemns the deaths of civilians from Israel's strike on Al-Tabeen School."

Senator Wong said Israel must comply with international humanitarian law and reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire.

About 1200 Israelis were killed and 250 hostages taken after Hamas militants stormed a music festival on October 7. In response, Israel's military has killed almost 40,000 Palestinians, according to the local health ministry.
