Women’s World Cup: Lauren Hemp relishing battle for places as Lionesses search for spark

Lauren Hemp is relishing the competition with Lauren James for her place in the England team.

James is pushing to come into the side for Friday's game against Denmark after the Lionesses laboured to a 1-0 win over Haiti in their World Cup opener.

The Chelsea winger could replace No10 Ella Toone, although Hemp or Chloe Kelly, who were on the wings on Saturday, may lose their place instead.

Hemp has been a regular under head coach Sarina Wiegman, starting every game as England won Euro 2022 last summer, and believes pressure from James will make her better.

"There's fantastic competition, especially in the forward areas," said Hemp. “As a team we've got such massive depth as a squad. Anyone can come in and change a game, so it's important that, as players, we are all pushing each other to be at the best of our ability.

"Obviously anything can happen so we will just see how it goes. But I think we all want each other to do well, so it's all about pushing each other."

There is an expectation surrounding the Manchester City player at this World Cup, with Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall tipping her to be Player of the Tournament.

Hemp said: "As Lucy [Bronze] said before: 'Pressure is a privilege'. We've all earned to be in this position and it's important that we use that as a strength of ours. Obviously as I'm getting older I'm getting more experience, so I'm now turning into probably one of the more experienced players here — which is weird saying that seeing as I'm still only 22.

"But I've taken it all in my stride really and I am taking every game as it comes. It's nice hearing comments from other coaches, but it all comes down to focusing on yourself, focusing on the team, getting that job done and then focus on individual stuff."

England and Denmark both won their opening games in Group D 1-0 and the victors in Sydney on Friday will all but guarantee themselves finishing top.

Potential changes to the attack come with the Lionesses having scored just once in open play since April.

"I think it is just about being more ruthless now," said Hemp. “We have shown we are dominant against a lot of teams. We just need to be a bit more clinical and those little percentages we need to rise going into the next game.

"I think we are all working really hard in training to make sure we are being more clinical, creating more chances and obviously getting our goal percentage higher.

"But we know it is something we need to improve on and we are working really hard as a team to make sure we are ready for the next game. We will be raring and ready to score some goals.

"We have seen in games that we are capable of doing that, so it's not like we have not scored before. It is just about making it click and getting those connections working."

England held an open training session this morning at the The Central Coast Stadium in Gosford, with about 2,500 fans attending.

The Lionesses' base is 15 minutes drive from there in Terrigal and Hemp is passing the time there by playing with Lego.

"I am working on a globe at the moment and then I've got a few other bits, so hopefully you'll see them soon," she said.

"I feel like it's really therapeutic. So, for me, after a long training session, after a hard day, I just go home and do that.

"I managed to get the Lego from Australia, which is handy. I am just trying to work out how I am actually going to transport it home at the moment!"
