Women's World Cup hosts Australia suffer defeat vs Scotland in showcase friendly at AFC Wimbledon

League Two side AFC Wimbledon have today played host to a huge women's international match between Women's World Cup hosts Australia and Scotland in an international friendly.

The clash saw several Women's Super League heavyweights battle against each other, with Hayley Raso of Manchester City start for the Matildas while Villa's Kirsty Hanson featured for Scotland - but there was no sign of Chelsea's Sam Kerr making her way onto the pitch.

It was a huge chance for women's football fans in and around Wimbledon and the capital to see two international sides battle it out at The Cherry Red Records Stadium - especially seeing the hosts of the upcoming Women's World Cup in action, and it was Scotland who edged out the Aussies with a well fought 1-0 win.

The game was viewed as a real test for Scotland, but they did well in the first 45, making it difficult for the Matildas, holding them to a 0-0 draw at half-time, but it was a half of missed chances for the Scots - something that has been a regular theme of late.

Scotland got the goal they deserved just two minutes into the second half with a sensational finish into the top right corner from Nicola Docherty - just her second goal for her side.

Despite chances from Australia pushing on the attack in the second half, Scotland did incredibly well to keep out the Matildas, giving fans a good show for the Good Friday clash.

A total of 2,136 were in attendance for the clash which eventually saw Scotland come out on top - a result not everybody would be expecting, but Australia arguably didn't put out their best side - so to experiment in preparation for the World Cup in just over three month's time.

Unfortunately, fans didn't get to see everybody had been waiting for - the Sam Kerr derby. Scotland's Kerr, who plays for Rangers in the Scottish Women's Premier League got her start while the Blues' Sam Kerr had to watch on from the bench.

Australia next take on England on Tuesday April 11 at Brenford's Community Stadium in the first of a double header along with the men's England side for Alzheimer's Society - who play on Wednesday.

While Scotland take on Costa Rica at Hampden Park for what will be a very special night on Tuesday also.
