As the Women's World Cup came to a close on Sunday, August 20, England’s Lionesses sadly didn’t come out on top, going up against Spain.
However, that’s not the only title players are competing with, as the race for the Golden Boot has also been decided. Lauren James was among those with three goals following her incredible double in England's 6-1 triumph over China.
However, it was Japan's Hinata Miyazawa that ultimately took the top spot on the top-scorer list after scoring a brace in the 4-0 victory against Spain.
Four years previously, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Ellen White of the USA and England, who each finished with six goals, shared the top-scoring honours. Both Rapinoe and Morgan contributed three assists, however, Rapinoe was awarded the golden boot since she scored her goals faster.
If two or more players tie for first place with the same amount of goals, assists and minutes played are used to determine who gets the Golden Boot.
What is the Golden Boot?
The Golden Boot is an honour given each season to the player who scores the most goals in league games for the highest level of a European national league. A sculpture of a football boot serves as the award.
The award, formerly known as the ‘Soulier d’Or’, which translates from French as golden shoe or boot, has been granted to the highest goalscorer in every European league during a season since its establishment in the 1967–68 campaign.
Lionel Messi is the top goalscorer, and has received the honour six times, all while representing Barcelona.
