Women only Halloween club night coming to city with Maleficent and Pennywise stilt performers

Velvet Liverpool is launching its first-ever LBQT+ women-only club night.

The Black Cat Halloween Ball is being held at Scale this weekend, and will hopefully be the first of a regular club night aimed only at lesbian, bisexual, queer and trans women. The themed event is said to be filled with "thumping tunes, drinks and dancing".

Organiser, Sam Wallace, told the ECHO : "The idea came about during lockdown and post-pandemic when a friend and I set up a group for lesbian and bisexual women on the Meetup platform. The response to that was huge and it got me thinking whether we could have our own women-only club night too."

Attendees will listen to DJ Em Johnston all night, who will be spinning a mix of Halloween anthems, as well 80s, 90s and pop music, alongside a stilt performer dressed as Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent and IT clown Pennywise to keep the crowd entertained. Guests are also encouraged to dress up with a prize for the best costume on the night up for grabs.

Sam added: "The Meetup group has done lots of events such as walks, brunches, nights out and film nights but nothing as big as this. For me as a gay woman, it just feels like there isn't anywhere to go for a women's only space or night out and the offering in town for women who identify as LBQT+ is limited.

"Scale is an incredible venue and they've been so good at letting us use their space. I want women to have a really great time, enjoy themselves and just come together and have a night just for us. I know there are other small groups doing great things, but I wanted to see if a club night, on a Friday or Saturday night, is something the community wants.

"If it goes well, then fantastic and if it doesn't, then it was worth a go. There are other cities doing this kind of thing and it is really popular, so I hope the LBQT+ community come out in support. Tickets are selling fast though which is a good sign."

The Black Cat Halloween Ball will run from 7.30 pm until midnight this Friday, October 28, and tickets are £11.50 (plus booking fee) from Skiddle. The event is at 68-76 Kempston Street, Liverpool, L3 8HL and is 18 and over.
