A man hit a woman he knew in the head with a hammer and stabbed her multiple times before she was found bloodied, badly bruised and missing teeth in a city hotel, police say.
Police say they were called to the hotel about 4am Sunday, following reports that a woman was in the reception area with serious injuries.
"The woman alleged that a man known to her had assaulted her, stabbed her multiple times, and hit her on the head with a hammer. The woman was observed to have injuries including missing teeth, stab wounds, and significant bruising and bleeding," police said in a statement.
"She also alleged that the man locked her in the hotel room, and she was unable to leave."
Police said they arrested a 31-year-old man after a short negotiation.
"He has been charged with aggravated intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, forcible confinement, and damaging property," they said.
"Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, and further charges are anticipated."
The man is expected to face a bedside hearing on Monday, August 5.
"If you are a victim of family violence, or believe someone you know is, you can contact police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, or attend any police station," police said.
